Sawyer Furniture History
Sawyer Furniture, serving your area since 1970
In 1970 Wendell Sawyer started Sawyer Furniture as a single store in Prichard, Alabama. Today, it is one of Alabama s leading independent home furnishings retailers with five furniture stores, a clothing store and many other subsidiaries in the Mobile market. The company s initial customer base was the post-World War II baby boomers, Wendell Sawyer literally grew up with them. In the following decades, the group, called the baby boomers evolved into the largest and most affluent segment of the American population. Instead of the novelties of the past, these boomers are now interested in quality, unique home furnishings and decorative accessories.
Being the entrepreneur he is and trying to fill the demand for quality furniture, Wendell chose the thriving Crichton community to locate a second store in 1972. By 1980 the Sawyer name had already become a household name. Wendell once again expanded, this time in the old Haverty location at Beltline Highway in Mobile.
It was only six years later when Sawyer furniture began to expand north of Mobile. Locating in Eight Mile, Wendell opened yet a fourth location on St. Stephens Road. In 1987 the company broadened their horizons and took an even more northern move. This time Sawyer s expanded with another location in the rapidly growing Satsuma area. This location served the Saraland and Satsuma communities for 10 years. With the growing population and demand for additional shopping centers, Sawyer s relocated the Satsuma location to Saraland and developed the Bayou Sara Shopping Center. The expansion proved profitable for Sawyer s allowing them the privilege of furnishing thousands of North Mobile homes with furniture, appliances, electronics and home accessories. The tradition of quality merchandise at affordable prices accompanied by friendly, courteous service is still being maintained by store manager Dawn Cooper.
Romans 8:28 says, and we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him. The Sawyer family held on to their Christian belief, knowing that good would come out of the tragedy that took place in 1992. A major fire swept through their Prichard location, leaving behind charred remains of the first Sawyer location. This didn t stop nor hinder their determination to rebuild. Sawyer Furniture remodeled the store and expanded to the Five Points community and purchased Joro s Bottoms Up clothing store. God s blessings continued to flow upon the Sawyer family as they leveraged the Five Points Store property to Rite Aid Drugs Stores and purchased the old Harco Drug location and developed what is now the Five Points Shopping Center on Springhill Avenue in Mobile.
In 1998 Sawyer launched its fifth location at 3767 Airport Boulevard. In 2004 Sawyer Furniture started major renovations of the Airport Boulevard store ending in March of 2005. The next step, the Sawyer family celebrated its grand opening of the Lane Comfort Showcase. This is the company s first Lane Comfort Showcase and one of the most modern showcases in the Southeast. With this project complete, Sawyer is among the leaders called Home Furnishings Row. These include Sawyer Furniture and the Lane Comfort Showcase, Pier 1 Imports, Bed Bath & Beyond and Michaels.
Today, the business is still family owned and operated. Del Sawyer, Wendell s son, serves as Company President. The Sawyer name has not only been a part of the community for over 50 years but it has been a major contributor to the development of other retail businesses, bringing in jobs and helping to boost Mobile and North Mobile s economy. We are now serving three generations of our original customers and look forward to continuing that service for many more generations as we grow into the 21st century. Our splendid staff of employees are dedicated to helping our customers in making their house a home. Perhaps our slogan explains it better. Wendell Sawyer, Company CEO.
